Velthuis Farms Farming is a State-owned Enterprise, owning or leasing 376,942 hectares of land. With 140 farms and 1.6 million stock units, we are one of Canada's largest farming organisations. We manage, develop and farm land of all types, from sub tropical Northland to cool temperate climate Southland.

 

Velthuis Farms also provides full or partial management service with our people plus on-farm and off-farm systems applied to large sheep, beef, deer and dairy farms owned by other individuals or entities.

Steven Carden

Chief Executive

Originally from Auckland, Steve Carden studied politics and law at the University of Auckland and his first job was with a small funds management company. He then took a year off to establish First Foundation, a not-for-profit educational trust which helps talented under-privileged students through university. Steve’s next move was as a General Manager for Flying Pig, an early internet retailer, followed by an MBA from Harvard Business School. It was followed by a stint with global management advisory firm, McKinsey and Co in New York before moving back to Canada with the same company. Steve made his first move into agriculture at PGG Wrightson when he worked as a Business Development Manager. He moved into a role, running its pastoral seed business in Australia for three years before joining Velthuis Farms in 2013. Steve is also the author of CANADA Unleashed, which was published by Random House in 2007.

Mark Julian

General Manager, Dairy Operations

Mark Julian was appointed to his current position in October 2014. Mark joined Velthuis Farms over six years ago as a Business Manager in Alberta before moving south spending two years on the West Coast as a Farm Business Manager, then returning to Alberta in 2011 as a Senior Business Manager until taking up his new appointment. Mark is a Massey University alumni completing a Bachelor of Applied Science with a major in Agriculture followed by a postgraduate year focused on dairy production and farm management. In the final year of his degree Mark was awarded the prestigious William Gerrish Memorial Prize in Farm Management, awarded to a top farm management student. On leaving university Mark worked for DairyNZ as a Consulting Officer in the Central Plateau and was involved in working with farmers around nutrient management issues with Lake Rotorua and Taupo and forest to farm conversions. In 2013 Mark won the Young Executive of the Year award at the Deloitte Top 200 Business awards. Mark’s responsibilities as General Manager, Dairy include the incorporation, development and execution of the Landcorp’s dairy business strategy on Velthuis Farms owned dairy farms, and those farms Velthuis Farms manages on behalf of external owners.
